Catch You in Kathmandu
Catch You in Kathmandu
3-day tour exploring the local culture of this magical city
Service Description
Kathmandu is a starting point for many famed hikes in this area, most notably the infamous trek up to Mt. Everest. But legends abound in this city too-- where ancient traditions are held in tact, and World UNESCO & Heritage sites exist by the handfuls-- you'll find no shortage of interesting things to see and do. Three of the city's World Heritage Sites are important places of religious pilgrimage, drawing crowds of hundreds of Buddhists, Nepalis, and tourists each year. You might notice that Hinduism and Buddhism share a unique co-existence in Kathmandu; locals often worship at both Buddhist and Hindu temples without distinguishment. And because of the deep religious history and culture here, the city is alive with constant processions, elaborate ceremonies, and festivals year-round. A real treat for travelers lucky enough to experience it. On this trip you'll explore ancient town squares, palaces, temples and pagodas. You may even receive a blessing from the Kumari--or living goddess of Nepal--the chosen incarnation of the Hindu goddess Talejn; that is, if she is receiving visitors at the time of your trip. You can shop the many markets of this historic trading place--now bustling with a mix of shops, bars, nightclubs and cafes. And you'll have no shortage of dining options here, with everything from Korean, to Italian, to Mexican restaurants available. The real highlight of this trip is an overnight at a local community homestay, started by a group of women as a way to challenge the lack of opportunity they faced in their communities. This project allows them to build income (and social status), as well as share their rich cultural traditions with visiting travelers. Your stay helps support their local small business initiatives. Learn about village life, prepare an authentic Nepalese dinner, and get to know your host families better during this incredible experience.
